EMC has unveiled a new range of products and solutions designed to connect primary storage and data protection systems to private and public clouds.

Tapping into the growing demand for cloud across New Zealand, the storage giant claims Kiwi organisations will be better equipped to take advantage of both the “agility and unlimited scalability” of public cloud services and the "control and security" of a private cloud infrastructure.

“It’s no secret that we’ve seen the rapid adoption of cloud within New Zealand businesses,” says Arron Patterson, CTO, EMC New Zealand.

“In fact we are seeing workloads move to the cloud at a faster rate in New Zealand than most other parts of the world.

“With this launch of our comprehensive hybrid cloud portfolio, we are accelerating the digital transformation of New Zealand enterprises by ensuring all data in the cloud, whether on or off premise, is protected and secure while still being highly accessible to business.”

As with all change strategies that drive innovation however, Patterson says there are risks to adopting cloud technologies that can mean loss of data and impact to business services.

“We encourage all customers to mitigate that risk by having in place a well thought out hybrid cloud strategy,” he adds.

“Cloud done right can lead to business innovation; cloud done wrong can lead to cloud chaos.”

As IT departments rush to keep pace with the demands of the rapidly changing business, Patterson says they often rely on both the private cloud - because it is trusted, controlled and reliable - and the public cloud - because of its low cost and near limitless capacity.

Consequently, Patterson says EMC is extending its out-of-the box enterprise cloud solutions in addition to launching a number of new data protection features.

Going forward, EMC is integrating new and expanded cloud capabilities across its entire storage and data protection portfolio including solutions to store and protect data to, from and within the cloud.

Encompassing data protection and management in the cloud - with new integrated cloud tiering - the company’s cloud enablement announcements come as part of a wider group of feature launches from EMC.

“Many businesses have seen huge benefits from strategically moving data and workloads to the cloud,” says Guy Churchward, President, Core Technologies, EMC.

“However, this often means sacrificing some control over the data.”

For Churchward, the key questions are apparent for enterprise.

“Can you move your data across public clouds? Can you intelligently manage your data through its lifecycle from flash to disk to cloud - and then move it back if you need it?

“And how do you protect it?”

Echoing Churchward’s comments, Mark Peters, Practice Director & Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group, believes businesses need “strategically capable partners” to help them to evolve and manage their storage strategies.

The result? “It’ll allow them to move forward both pragmatically and optimally in a world of spiralling data volumes and demands,” Peters adds.

“With this announcement, EMC is providing customers with solutions that allow them to better protect their current and future investments in storage technologies whether in their own data centres and/or in the cloud.”
