Christchurch in 2016… the unofficial Kiwi city of tech heads?

“There is certainly much more to Canterbury than earthquake-related construction."

Christchurch looks set to be a city of tech heads during the year ahead, with science and technology related roles showing strong promising signs of growth heading into 2016.

Online employment website Seek claims industries such as Science and Technology (up 24 percent), CEO and General management (up 15 percent) and Call Centre and Customer Service (up 30 percent) represent the best opportunities for jobs, as well as Consulting and Strategy which looks set to grow as much as 53 percent.

“There is certainly much more to Canterbury than earthquake-related construction,” says Janet Faulding, General Manager, Seek New Zealand.

“Over the last 24 months the opportunities for work were largely dominated by the rebuild so it is encouraging to see more industries feeling confident to take on employees.

“Many Cantabrians are likely to be surprised at how diverse their employment market is heading into 2016.”

Rise of IT

The industries which have demonstrated strong year on year growth are relatively small employers compared to other industries.

However for Faulding, they provide a “good reflection” of an employment market which is perhaps transitioning to a position of being able to support a broader range of industries.

“In Canterbury we have over 60 job ads for Software Developers and Programmers, and more than 170 roles available in the IT industry,” Faulding adds.

“As the city is re-building we’re seeing an increase in service roles such as IT, consulting, customer service and general management, which is more aligned to the trends we’re noticing in the Auckland labour market.”
