FunderTech seeks startups for Chinese angel funding

FunderTech says it has forged a relationship with a Chinese investor club with offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu

Auckland-based FunderTech — a company that helps startup tech companies find funding, business development, manufacturing and product distribution opportunities in China — is offering Kiwi startups the chance to pitch to Chinese angel investors.

FunderTech says it has forged a relationship with a Chinese investor club with offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu that will enable five to eight businesses from around the world to pitch in front of 500-800 Chinese angel investors at monthly ‘summit’ conferences.

FunderTech founder Rob Thomas says China is awash with cash and looking abroad for venture capital investment opportunities. He believes many Chinese angel investors are looking for emerging market products in agricultural technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, education technology, SaaS and health technology.

"New Zealand is a hot-bed for testing great ideas but often lacks access to global capital and consumer markets,” he said.

FunderTech quotes Fortune Magazine, which reported: “In 2016 China had raised $US338b ($471b) to invest in start-up businesses. There are 780 funds making China the biggest pool of start-up investment in the world.”

It added: “According to Bain and China Merchants Bank China’s population of high net worth individuals of more than $US1.6m ($2.2m) has more than doubled since 2010. Of those surveyed 36 percent said they expected to increase their investments in ‘innovative’ sectors.”

FunderTech says: “With just a few start-up businesses selected each month to present at the China Global Investment Summit there is a pre-application process to match with prospective partners. The ideal startup businesses has developed a working prototype and/or have early stage sales, validated market research and an exit strategy.”

It is inviting applications for spots at its forthcoming summit in Chengdu in late September at which the speaker will be Tenby Powell, described as “a leading New Zealand Government advisor on supporting New Zealand's SMEs [and] also the co-founder of New Zealand's largest technology business network Kiwi Link [who] has been involved in many angel investment projects.”
