Google to bring its cloud platform to Australia

Sydney data centres for Google Cloud Platform

Google will next year launch a Sydney Google Cloud Region as part of a significant program of geographical expansion. In addition to Sydney, Google will launch regions in Mumbai, Singapore, Northern Virginia, São Paulo, London, Finland and Frankfurt.

The move will bring to 14 the number of Google Cloud Regions, with the company saying more will be announced next year. Each region comprises multiple data centres.

Google has not revealed a timeline for the launch of the new regions. The company has indicated it intends to launch around one region a month in 2017, which would mean it could end the year with up 18 regions in total.

As with the cloud offerings from competitors Amazon and Microsoft, the Google Cloud Platform offers compute, storage and networking as a service as well as a number of other on-demand products covering data analytics, identity and security and machine learning.

Amazon Web Services launched local data centres for its cloud services in late 2012. Microsoft launched Australian Azure data centres in 2014.

In addition to revealing the plan to launch more regions for the company’s cloud platform, in a blog entry Brian Stevens, vice president, Google Cloud, wrote that the company is planning a new role for the Google Cloud Platform team, dubbed Customer Reliability Engineering (CRE).

“Designed to deepen our partnership with customers, CRE is comprised of Google engineers who integrate with a customer’s operations teams to share the reliability responsibilities for critical cloud applications,” Stevens wrote.

“This integration represents a new model in which we share and apply our nearly two decades of expertise in cloud computing as an embedded part of a customer's organization. We’ll have more to share about this soon.”
