Connexionz software to manage New York ferries

Christchurch-based Connexionz, which specialises in the development and delivery of real time passenger information and intelligent systems for managing transport networks, has been awarded a contract for software and systems to manage a new New York ferry service.

NYC Ferry will manage six routes over 60 nautical miles of waterways connecting New Yorkers and visitors to the city’s waterfront communities. Services are scheduled to commence on 1 May.

Connexionz says it will install and manage new highly accurate laser-based passenger counting systems, a range of on-board real time service displays, and passenger infotainment services.

“Behind the scenes, Connexionz software will integrate with the vessel engines to manage and monitor engine parameters, such as fuel flow, maintenance schedules and hours of service,” it said.

“In addition, smart data reporting will help Hornblower with fleet maintenance and tracking and service analysis, including on-time performance.”

The solution will be based on Connexionz’ TransitManager ITS suite integrated with customer specific applications and services. To manage this project, Connexionz said it had expanded its software development team at its Christchurch headquarters.

Connexionz CEO, Rhod Pickavance said the system would initially look after Hornblower’s 20 ferries, and the company would also install its equipment on the shuttle buses that will take commuters to and from the several ferry terminals throughout Manhattan and Queens,” says Pickavance.

Paul Lambson, head of customer success at NYC Ferry said Connexionz had been chosen for the quality of its technology, capability, and proven performance. “We were impressed with the team’s considerable integration expertise, support, and experience,” he said. “Overall, Connexionz presented the most convincing and cost-effective proposal.”
