NZ cloud services provider Catalyst Cloud has joined the OpenStack Public Cloud Passport programme and is offering free trials of OpenStack public cloud services.
The program was announced yesterday by the OpenStack Foundation at the OpenStack Summit being held in Sydney. It aims to give anyone interesting in investigating use of OpenStack services a way to do so at no cost.
Catalyst Cloud general manager Bruno Lago, said anyone was welcome to trial its open infrastructure to deliver digital services in or from New Zealand. Catalyst is offering $300 of credit on the Catalyst Cloud, valid for two months after activation.
In its announcement of the program the OpenStack Foundation described it as a collaborative effort among the OpenStack Public Cloud working group to help prospective users quickly experience the freedom, performance and interoperability of open source infrastructure.
“The first step is an aggregation of free trial programs from participating OpenStack-powered public clouds, including Catalyst, City Network, Elastx, Home at Cloud, Memset, OVH, Scale Up Tech, Telefonica, UKCloud and Vexxhost,” it said.
The chair of OpenStack’s Public Cloud Working Group, Tobias Rydberg, said more public cloud providers would join the program, adding customer value for more locations, languages and legalities.
“The launch of the OpenStack Passport program here in Sydney, by open cloud providers worldwide, is the first step in our shared commitment to customer service.”
The program was one component a four-part strategy announced at the summit, which the Foundation said, aimed to address integration of OpenStack and relevant open source technologies.

- documenting cross-project use cases,
- collaborating across communities, including upstream contributions to other open source projects,
- fostering new projects at the OpenStack Foundation, and
- coordinating end-to-end testing across projects.
Other initiatives announced to support the strategy were OpenLab, and the Financial Services Team.
OpenLab is billed as “a community-led program to test and improve support for the most popular software development kits (SDKs)—as well as platforms like Kubernetes, Terraform, Cloud Foundry and more—on OpenStack,” with the goal being “to improve the usability, reliability and resiliency of tools and applications for hybrid and multi-cloud environments.”
The financial services team will “help identify and fill in the gaps for OpenStack adoption in the financial industry.”
