FRAMINGHAM (09/18/2003) - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission this week granted SBC Communications Inc. approval to offer long-distance service in Michigan.
The FCC voted unanimously to allow the carrier to turn up service in that state after determining that SBC has complied with the Telecommunications Act of 1996 provision to open its local access network to competitors.
With the approval, SBC plans to soon offer Michigan customers service bundles that include unlimited local and log-distance calling, DSL Internet access and wireless service for a discounted rate when purchased together. SBC already offers such service bundles in eight of its 13 states, including Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The RBOC plans to turn up long-distance service in Michigan on Sept. 26.
SBC is awaiting FCC decisions on long-distance applications in its remaining four states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. The deadline for an FCC decision is Oct. 15.
