Sony adds video to new Crusoe-based Vaio notebook

The two models, the Vaio GT and Vaio QR, were announced in Tokyo and are expected to be available in Japan in late November, Sony said in a statement.

The Vaio GT will provide users with up to 17 hours of battery life, depending on the size of battery chosen and the type of usage, according to Sony. As well as Transmeta's 600MHz TM5600 Crusoe processor, the system includes a 680,000 pixel CCD video camera with a 10x optic zoom lens that Sony has attached to the side of the laptop.

Sony said the video camera will allow users to quickly and easily capture moving images and then send them across the Internet to other users, ushering in new ways of using computers and the Internet. The laptop's screen and the video lens can be rotated through 180 degrees.

The Vaio GT is expected to retail for about 300,000 yen ($US2784), a spokeswoman with Sony Electronics confirmed.

The 3.2 kilogram Vaio QR, meanwhile, comes with a 13.3-inch (34 cm) TFT (thin film transistor) colour display. Other specifics will be announced at a later date, Sony said in a news release. The Vaio QR is expected to retail in Japan for 200,000 yen ($US1,856), the Sony Electronics spokeswoman said.
