Novell sees delay in shipping Open Enterprise Server

Novell said Friday that its new Open Enterprise Server (OES) product will ship in February 2005, about two months later than the company had announced at its March BrainShare user conference.

OES incorporates SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9, as well as the NetWare kernel. SLES 9 shipped as an independent product in August, with the first service pack to SLES 9 due out in January. That prompted the delay, Novell said, because it made more sense to integrate the first service pack than to require new OES customers to do so.

"The rationale is to make it easier for customers and partners," said Novell spokesman Bruce Lowry.

Novell officials said the schedule change means OES will actually ship 10 months ahead of its original schedule.
