Interoperable disaster management platform in works for Australia

A next-generation, national disaster management platform under development will be interoperable and based on open standards.

IBM, NICTA and the University of Melbourne announced they will work together over the next few years to develop the IT platform, which has been dubbed the Australia Disaster Management Platform (ADMP). Pilot trials will take place in selected areas of Melbourne.

Historically, disaster management tools have not been interoperable across different emergency services, “fuelling a siloed, uncoordinated and less effective approach to disaster management,” the groups said.

The ADMP can “gather, integrate and analyse vast amounts of geo-spatial and infrastructure information from multiple data sets to create real-time practical information streams on disaster events,” they said.

The platform can then relay that information to central coordinating agencies, on-ground emergency services personnel and the community, they said.
