Toybox: Autofocus webcam only for Macs

Most Macs already have a built-in webcam, but Logitech cam has its advantages

Logitech sent its QuickCam Vision Pro webcam to Computerworld to test. What is remarkable about the USB webcam is that it is Mac-only.

Now, most Macs already have a built-in webcam, which made me wonder about the demand for such a device. However, the camera has its advantages. It features an autofocus system, which actually focuses fast and gives a pretty decent close-up. The technology apparently compensates for changes in sharpness and refocuses images fast — in less than three seconds, according to the company. The webcam also adjusts in dim environments or strong backlight.

Logitech has collaborated with optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss to make the lens meet the Zeiss standards for design and manufacturing.

The QuickCam Vision Pro, which features a 2-megapixel sensor, works with iChat, Skype and other applications, such as Tweetr. All you have to do is plug it into the USB port, open the application you want to use and away you go. No need to download or install any software.

The webcam has the ability to record VGA video at up to 30 frames per second.

It can be mounted to your Mac display or placed on your desk, using its stand/lever.

To be honest, it’s not fitting super-snugly on my MacBook so I prefer to keep it on the desk.

The camera is quite handy for moving around the room, to show off your new bike, your tidy flat or whatever, during a video conference.

RRP for the Mac-only webcam is $199.95.
