The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has tendered for a supply of as many as 200,000 fridge magnets, to be utilised as part of the user interface for the FarmsOnLine farm information system.

FarmsOnLine is a $3.1 million project that will house data from farms in order to assist MAF in managing response programmes for an emergency or disease outbreak. It is scheduled to go live in March.

It will contain details of stock and crops currently on each farm. More information about the project can be found on the MAF website.

The magnet sent out to each farm will carry that property’s identifier - the FarmID. Each FarmID contains up to 15 characters consisting of two letters, up to three hyphens and up to 11 numbers.

The magnet is also likely to show the address of the farm and the MAF logo, says a Ministry spokesman; but details have not been finalised and some design features are in the hands of the successful tenderer.

The individual FarmID “ideally will be integral to the construction [of the magnet] rather than affixed” says the tender request. The magnet must be strong enough to attach to the door through “lightweight cardboard”, MAF says.
