Dear What Am I Worth,

I am a support engineer in Christchurch working at a small branch office of a large organisation.

I plan, install, support and troubleshoot computers and networks including Windows NT/2000 Server and SBS 2000 Server, Exchange 5.5 and 2000 Server, ISA Server, all flavours of Windows desktop OS, Cisco ADSL and frame relay routers with firewalls and VPN connections, Citrix servers and printers. The job ranges from desktop support to planning and installation of mission-critical servers and whole systems.

My background is five-plus years in IT with various support and installation roles, with NT 4.0 MCSE and Win 2K Pro MCP qualifications.

I have worked for this company for more than a year and will soon be due for re-negotiations. I have had very good feedback from clients and generated repeat business as well as securing ongoing work with regular clients.

The job is great, but the pay is not — how much am I really worth?

Alliance IT Recruitment replies: In Auckland a junior engineer starts at around $45,000 and goes through to a senior at around $65,000. Salaries are generally lower in Christchurch and you should allow a margin for that.
