Sun, SNI to detail partnership for Solaris on Intel

Sun Microsystems and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (SNI) were expected overnight to announce a partnership under which the German computer maker will offer Sun Solaris servers running on Intel processors. SNI executives in Germany were also scheduled to host a teleconference for press and analysts in which the company will detail its strategy for the Unix market.

Sun has of late forged a number of alliances for its Unix operating system in a bid to stave off competition from Microsoft 's Windows NT.

The company last month announced a partnership with Fujitsu Ltd. in which the Japanese computer giant will work with Sun on enhancements to Solaris, and build Solaris servers running on Intel processors.

SNI executives in the US will join John McFarlane, vice president and general manager of Sun's Solaris group, at 10 a.m. PDT Monday to discuss the deal. Press and analysts can join the conference by calling 800-530-9601.
