Boost for NZ as Vocus completes $780 million telco acquisition

Vocus Communications has completed its largest acquisition to date, with the $780million purchase of amcom, a provider of telco and IT services headquartered in Perth, Western Australia.
According to the company, this latest addition helps cements Vocus’ position as a leading infrastructure player in the competitive trans-Tasman telecommunications space.
Along with extensive network assets that complement Vocus’ own fibre infrastructure, amcom brings new products and capabilities that build on Vocus’ existing managed services, cloud and security solutions.
With this move, Vocus now boasts a market capitalisation of $1.5 billion.
For New Zealand organisations, this acquisition is a significant development in supplier choice for trans-Tasman network and managed services.
“The combined infrastructure assets of the two businesses means no other Australian or New Zealand provider can match our trans-Tasman own fibre coverage and capability across both countries,” says Maxine Elliott, CEO, Vocus Communications New Zealand.
“For example, if you need to connect to offices in any Australian city, you can now jump on the Vocus’ network from any major exchange in New Zealand, and remain on our network right through to your destination.
“Ultimately, this provides a more direct, better managed and controlled service compared with using multiple carriers.”
Vocus owns and maintains in excess of 4,200km fibre throughout New Zealand, and 6,800km in Australia - it can now connect almost every Australian CBD building to its network, while its New Zealand network is one of the most UFB-connected.
In addition, it also owns significant international capacity to USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, where it has several points of presence.
Furthermore, tto network services, Vocus owns and maintains 22 data centres throughout the Australia and New Zealand region.
Following last year’s purchase of New Zealand fibre provider FX Networks, this latest acquisition is one of the most significant chapters in the Vocus’ story.

“And while we’ve always been in a strong position when it comes to the quality, resilience and scalability of our network, we can now offer customers a truly comprehensive fibre network spread across both countries.

“Now, with Amcom’s expertise in managed services, cloud and security solutions, we have plugged that gap.”
Vocus Communications looks after 3,000 clients, employs 600 staff throughout Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Australia, and has more than 20 offices.
