Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) has named a former IBM Corp. software executive as its president and chief executive officer elect.

John Swainson, until recently vice president for IBM's worldwide software sales force, joined CA on Monday. For now, Swainson reports to interim chief executive officer Kenneth Cron, and will take over from him after a transition period of four to six months, the company said Tuesday. Swainson will take charge of CA's software and product development strategy, and will also sit on the board of directors.

CA's chief operating officer and chief financial officer Jeff Clarke will remain in that role, reporting to Cron, the company said.

Swainson, aged 50, worked at IBM for 26 years in roles including sales, marketing and product development, according to CA.

Cron will remain a board member at CA after handing over the role of chief executive officer to Swainson, the company said.
