Like it or not, one of the key ingredients of news is conflict. It’s a distasteful truth that has stuck with me from 20 years ago at journalism school. It might not be a particularly uplifting starting point for writing copy, but a blood-spattered battleground sure gives a reporter an obvious beginning.

A dream of a better ISOCNZ

I had a dream. I’d gone backstage after a recent concert by Neil Finn and friends. In the dream I go up to the legend of Split Enz (and much more) fame and ask, “Who stands out above all others in the land for the ability to split hairs?”

Easter egg hunt yields surprise

To mark the season I thought it appropriate to go on an Easter egg hunt. I doubt that the number of finds I made would sate a true chocoholic but I wasn’t totally dissatisfied with what I discovered.

Storage no bore, really

Snorage is the unflattering nickname for what’s actually one of today’s healthiest IT market sectors. But storage, unfortunately, is a bit like uninterruptible power supplies — no matter how hard you try, it’s nigh on impossible to stay awake while the subject’s under discussion, let alone generate any excitement about it. I thought I’d have a go, anyway.

Goodbye, poor Mac, I knew you well

Just as Apple releases its most significant operating system upgrade ever, Mac OS X (that's a 10, not an x), I'm finally accepting that my user relationship with the company is coming to an end.
