When the New Zealand Defence Force moved into its new building in Aitken Street in Wellington in March, the IT environment also got a makeover. The new Defence House, which has been designed to reduce energy consumption, houses five separate datacentres and around 900 personnel.
APC has demonstrated a fuel cell unit that fits into a standard datacentre rack. The ultimate aim is to displace the traditional diesel generators that supply backup power. The fuel cell is aimed at installations where environmental concerns outweigh cost and it could also be a part of greener data-centres in the future.
The MetService in Wellington is moving its 100 servers to a new datacentre and investing in new cooling, surveillance and power systems.
The planned merger of APC and Schneider Electric would combine two companies that have been competitors for datacentre backup power business. But it would also leave in its wake uncertainty about the companies’ future product line directions.
