Datacom has gained two five-figure contracts for work on the online interface for census information, as Statistics New Zealand ramps up to the next census in 2011.
Statistics New Zealand’s system, Online Census Option, provides New Zealanders with the option of completing their census forms online. The 2006 Census of Populations and Dwellings was the first time people could use either the internet response system or the traditional paper-based system.
A failed module in the computerised census system forced area supervisors to fall back on manual procedures which were over-loading the total system and putting what Statistics New Zealand has acknowledged as untenable pressures on field staff in some areas.
Statistics New Zealand plans to offer an internet lodgement option in the 2006 census and government statistician Brian Pink (pictured) admits he’s nervous at the prospect.
