  • Datasouth's former MD accused of $103 million fraud

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has officially laid charges against former Datasouth managing director, Gavin Bennett.
The SFO alleges that Bennett orchestrated a $103 million fraud involving a Ponzi-style scheme and false accounting.
The former MD now faces six representative charges under the Crimes Act, relating to approximately 900 separate incidents of alleged misuse of a document, along with two charges of false accounting.
Bennett allegedly created false documents relating to a lease of IT equipment to fraudulently obtain funds from South Canterbury Finance totalling approximately $65 million, between April 2005 and March 2011.

  • Datasouth debt 'commercially sensitive'

Receivers for failed office equipment lender Datasouth Finance have drawn a veil over the size of its debt to South Canterbury Finance, saying it was ''considered to be commercially sensitive information'', despite a Serious Fraud Office probe and reports the debt could be as large as $26 million.
Datasouth Finance is a related company to IT firms Datasouth Business Solutions, Datasouth Technology Services and Datasouth.

  • Liquidators' report paints dark picture of Datasouth

IT solutions provider Datasouth, which went into liquidation on March 31, owes millions of dollars to more than 80 potential creditors according to a preliminary report by the company's appointed liquidators.

  • Maxnet signs Datasouth

Maxnet has signed a new client, IT services provider Datasouth, for its Christchurch datacentre, which opened in April.
Datasouth is a systems integrator that provides business intelligence, software development, network infrastructure and system design and support services.
In a statement from Maxnet announcing the signing of Datasouth, Jonn-Paul Lambie, Datasouth's chief technology officer, says Maxnet's status as an ISP helped win it the deal.
"Maxnet could offer us five times the bandwidth for the price we paid to our previous internet provider," he says.
Datasouth is based in Christchurch, and will mainly utilise Maxnet's Christchurch datacentre, but will also use Maxnet's Auckland datacentre for redundancy and disaster recovery.
Other Maxnet customers include APN Online, M&C Saatchi, Yarrows and TrustPower.
