Yesterday was the first anniversary of the passing of the Telecommunications Act and the Commerce Commission is celebrating by announcing a probe into local loop unbundling (LLU).
The government has committed telecommunications commissioner Douglas Webb to providing a report on the pros and cons of unbundling the local phone loop before the end of next year.
In a decision viewed as a victory for incumbent local phone providers, better known collectively as Baby Bells, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has ordered a review of the regulations that govern how the Bells must treat competitors in the local phone market.
