  2degrees has announced it will shut down its 2G mobile network in March 2018.

• Vodafone NZ to deploy narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) network

  Vodafone NZ has announced plans to upgrade its mobile network to support NB-IoT, a recently standardised variant of cellular technology designed to enable mobile networks to support IoT applications.

• Telecom to commercialise national Wi-Fi network

  Telecom New Zealand, which has been in the process of transforming selected public phone boxes into Wi-Fi hotspots, will have 700 of them live by October 7, with 2000 hotspots expected to be live by mid 2014.

• UPDATE: Radio spectrum auction to start on October 29

  The auction conditions include requirements for mobile network operators to upgrade their existing rural cell sites to 4G capability within five years, and for successful bidders to continue expanding cellular coverage.
