Google's failure to win a bid for 6,000 patents formerly owned by bankrupt telecomms equipment maker Nortel Networks raises doubts about Google's commitment to Android and its large community of developers and device manufacturers, an analyst said on Friday.
Nortel Networks has obtained court approval to accept a US$900 million bid from Google for the entirety of its remaining patent portfolio, it said Monday.
Google has apparently decided that buying Nortel's patents could be a strong repellent against potential lawsuits.
Microsoft has agreed to pay US$7.5 million to purchase a block of 666,624 IPv4 addresses from bankrupt Canadian telecomms equipment maker Nortel Networks in a move that some see as a signal of the increasing value of IPv4 addresses.
Networking specialist Ciena has set up shop in New Zealand and Australia, prompted by its acquistion of Nortel Networks’ metro ethernet business (MEN) in the wake of Nortel’s bankruptcy. Former Nortel offices in the two countries are now Ciena ones.
Former Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski is seeking more that US$12 million from the bankrupt company, according to a filing in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
Zafirovski, who failed to turn around the once venerable telecomms giant after an accounting scandal, a series of financial restatements and the economic recession, wants no less than $12,250,543.48 from Nortel. Nortel filed for bankruptcy in January, began liquidating assets in June, and saw Zafirovski resign in August.
The breakdown of the payout Zafirovski believes he in entitled to is:
• $2.4 million in base salary for 24 months
• $3.6 million in bonuses
• $200,543.48 pro rata bonus for the third quarter of 2009
• $50,000 in insurance benefits
• And $6 million in a lump sum annuity.
Zafirovski claims his 2005 employment contract with Nortel entitles him to the millions. As Nortel sheds its businesses and assets, shareholders are not receiving any payback from their investments.
Nortel declined to comment.
Even as its future hangs in the air, Nortel continues to release new products. It has extended its Ethernet series of data solutions by unveiling the new Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5600 family for enterprises.
