PSINet has bought its first Australian Internet service provider.
The communications service provider did not disclose financial terms of its deal to buy privately held Zircon Systems, based in Sydney. Zircon Systems has as its customers about 3,500 consumers and midsize businesses, and offers dedicated and dial-up Internet connectivity, PSINet said in a statement yesterday.
Herndon, Virginia-based PSINet has previously announced that it intends to continue expanding in the Asia-Pacific region as part of its overall strategy to have a presence in the world's 20 largest telecommunications markets. The company has been aggressively buying Internet service providers in both the Asia-Pacific region and in Latin America.
Last week, PSINet said that it wants to become an Internet "super carrier," building more than 20 e-commerce Web hosting centres globally and acquiring more infrastructure.
