Sun Microsystems yesterday lowered by 20 per cent the price of its cheapest workstation to $US1995, and aimed it squarely at users who would normally buy a high-end PC.
The Ultra 5 is a workstation powered by a SPARC processor and comes standard with Sun's 64-bit Solaris Unix-based operating system, Sun officials said. It can also be fitted with the SunPCi PC co-processor card to allow the workstation to run five other operating systems, including Java and Linux as well as Microsoft's Windows NT and 98, the company officials said.
Sun is targeting the Ultra 5 particularly at the application-development community, the company said.
