Nortel rolls out IP systems for small business

Nortel Networks has launched a unified communications platform to provide small and medium-size businesses with a range of internet-based voice and data communications.

The network equipment vendor also announced a strategy and Web-enabled services to help resellers market its products.

Nortel's new platform, called Enterprise Edge, offers companies a network of data and voice communications linked to the iInternet, Bridget Braxton, a Nortel spokeswoman, said.

The platform includes an integrated router to manage data communications among offices through local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), a private branch exchange ( PBX) that manages all telephone communications internally and externally and voice-over-IP (Internet Protocol) communications that enable internet-based telephony.

The platform, available now, offers several pre-installed software applications optimised for Microsoft's Windows NT operating system.

Nortel is also offering its 13,000 resellers a free, online marketing strategy to help them sell to small and medium-size businesses.

The "Partner Source" program allows resellers to access, via the internet, a complete marketing program, including advertisements, brochures and sales presentations. "The focus is to target resellers so they improve their business performance and better-serve our customers, the end users," said Nortel spokeswoman Tracy Dupree.
