NYSE Euronext fires up Solarflare 10 Gb Ethernet kit in HFT acceleration bid

Application acceleration also vital in network upgrade

The New York Stock Exchange group (NYSE Euronext) has plugged into a 10 Gigabit Ethernet setup with new server adapters and application acceleration from Solarflare.

The stock exchange, which boasts sub-150 microsecond round trip latency on network messages, has connected the Solarflare SFN5122F server adapters as well as the supplier's OpenOnload application acceleration software, in its data centres, as it continues to drive faster share trading.

The technology has been installed at NYSE's key datacentres in Basildon in Essex, and across the Atlantic in Mahwah in New Jersey.

NYSE said the move was vital as each data centre supported billions of transactions and quote requests every day. Many of the trades are generated at speed by algorithmic or high frequency traders (HFT) including hedge funds.

Andrew Bach, senior vice president of network services at the exchange, said the application acceleration system was a "robust, rigorously tested and fully supported solution that addresses our demanding support and service level requirements".

NYSE Euronext, which is merging with Deutsche Borse, is understood to be focusing operations on a single Red Hat Linux-based trading platform as it targets a 79 million (£64 million) saving from annual IT costs alongside to deliver robust, fast messaging.
