New WD hard drive

Upgraded model doubles capacity

Western Digital is shipping its fastest-ever VelociRaptor hard-disk drive, which uses a 6Gbit/s serial ATA interface and comes in 45GB and 600GB versions.

The new WD VelociRaptor has twice the capacity of its predecessor and is still the only 10,000 RPM SATA hard disk drive on the market. It is designed for blade servers and other servers, high-performance PCs and Macs, and professional workstations.

With 32GB of onboard cache, the new model boasts a 15% performance increase, according to WD.

While Western Digital recently released its first solid state drive, the company still recognises that when it comes to price-per-gigabyte, hard-disk drives will outpace SSDs for some time yet.
