Broadband subscriber numbers hit one million

Latest Statistics NZ survey shows 1.3 million on broadband

The number of broadband subscribers in New Zealand has passed the million mark, according to figures released today from Statistics New Zealand’s latest Internet Service Provider survey.

The survey, which calculated subscriber numbers as of June, found that by then, there were 1,131,000 broadband subscribers, an increase of 27% since the previous survey, which was conducted in March 2008.

Broadband subscribers now comprise three-quarters of all internet users, the survey found.

There are now 219,500 subscribers accessing broadband via mobile data cards, cable or satellite, 53% more than when the March 2008 survey was done, when the figure totalled 143,000.

The number of broadband subscribers with data caps of 20GB or more has approximately tripled from the previous survey, and now stands at 126,000.

However, roughly half of all broadband subscribers still have a data cap of less than 5GB.

The survey is now conducted each year in June.
