IBM embraces Firefox

Open source browser will be officially supported by IBM in New Zealand and abroad

IBM staff in New Zealand and around the world now have the option of using the open source Firefox web browser as an alternative to Internet Explorer.

On May 13, IBM made Firefox available to staff around the world from its internal servers, and IBM's helpdesk staff have been trained to support it.

"It's up to employees to choose whether they wish to use it, and those who do will now have the necessary support," IBM New Zealand spokeswoman Rachel Dahlberg says.

Firefox will be "rolled out as a standard build on our employee workstations," she says.

At the time of the announcement, 10% of IBM's global staff were already using Firefox.

IBM has 300,000 staff worldwide and approximately 730 fulltime employees and 240 contractors in New Zealand.
