Wellington City Council has restructured its information-handling functions, merging the IT department with the City Information Unit, which handles the non-technical side of information management and information services.

CIU functions included management of archives, geographical information systems (GIS) and asset management.

Former IT manager Alma Hong (pictured) has been appointed to head the new department.

“We want to put the emphasis on information management and information services as processes, using technology as an enabler,” Hong says.

The melding of the two departments will both “lift the game plan” of IT people and make CIU staff more aware of the technological infrastructure that supports their efforts, she says.

Jos van Herk has moved into the technical IT manager role formerly occupied by Hong, with the title “technology services manager”.
