Until now in New Zealand, such security has only been offered to customers of “tier-one” service players, like EDS, or through ad hoc setups within the branch offices of a single company or with a specific partner, says director Roger Cockayne.

HDS, born out of Hitachi Data Systems when Cockayne and partner Wayne Norrie took over 49% of the local Hitachi subsidiary last year, aims to get users’ systems communicating at low level, to free them from the problem of having to have compatible operating systems and databases at either end. Backup and recovery will be simply a matter of unstructured data flow — “disk talking to disk” — says Norrie.

The company, however, acknowledges that it is still looking for a partner to provide suitable high-capacity communications links between its sites in Wellington and Auckland.
