Statistics NZ joins print and web

Statistics New Zealand is on a fact-finding mission to ascertain whether it can integrate its printing and web-publishing systems.

The government department has issued a request for information for a content management system that will pull together both print and web-based publishing.

Statistics NZ produces media releases, Hot Off The Press data releases, key statistics data compendia, newsletters and departmental reports. Other products include analytical reports, training and educational resources, and technical documentation.

While most of these have been distributed in printed, the emphasis is shifting to electronic dissemination, mainly through the agency’s website, Statistics NZ uses a range of systems for producing content including Lotus Notes Domino, Adobe Acrobat and Dreamweaver for the web and QuarkXPress, Pagemaker, Photoshop, Freehand and Deltagraph for print.

Project manager Jocelyn Young says the aim is to remove some of the manual processes involved in translating print-designed material to the web.

“We want to simplify and automate some of those processes.”

She says the department doesn’t yet know whether integrating print and web publishing systems is unusual and expects to find out from the RFI process. The department still hasn’t decided whether it will implement a system in-house or outsource the solution.

The chosen solution will conform to three-tier or n-tier client-server architecture, have a graphical user interface and integrate with Lotus Notes mail.
