Nokia and Telecom are working together to track down users of a pair of Nokia modems that were the centre of a safety warning last month.
Users of M1122 and MW1122 DSL modems, which were used with Telecom's JetStream service, were warned by Nokia of a problem with the power cord. When unplugged from the modem the cord could snap off a mental prong and potentially deliver a powerful electric shock.
All users of the modems were warned of the danger and asked to bring the devices in to Next Electronics for testing and replacement if needed.
Next is now in the process of contacting users whose modems' serial numbers match the batch of modems most likely to be affected and will send a technician out to repair the modems if necessary.
"We want to be doubly sure we find all those that have the potential for harm," says Nokia spokesman Rob Gill. He says there are "less than a thousand" potentially troublesome modems in New Zealand and all should be tested and replaced within the next couple of weeks.
