More free MB among possibilities for JetStream

Telecom is weighing up changes to its JetStream DSL service -- including a higher threshold of free traffic -- to make it more manageable for users.

The telco currently charges $99 for monthly including modem rental, plus ISP charges of around $20 with additional megabytes at 20 cents for the 600MB of free traffic allowed under the JetStream 600 account and$229 plus ISP charges with extra megabytes at 18 cents for JetStream 1500.

Product and service development manager Jonathan Segel says a higher threshold is an option being considered.

Segel says broadband services create "an interesting proposition" for providers "because it rewrites the rules about industry dynamics and about the economics of providing internet access."

Offering 800MB or 1000MB of free traffic is "one of the things we're actively considering. There's a cost to us of course and we've got to factor that in, but it's one of the options on the table," says Segel.

He says Telecom is also working on a new reporting platform, "which will allow users to go in and look at individual sessions of their usage and see in detail what was happening when" and hopes that might end quibbles over metering.

Segel also acknowledges that some users are unhappy that the new 128Bit/s all-you-can-eat JetStart service is only available to residential customers.
