Walker Wireless says its wireless broadband service, about to extend to Dunedin, won't be limited to data services.
Walker CEO Paul Ryan says the company's network is expanding rapidly "to meet demand for affordable broadband" and that the additional spectrum it acquired at the government spectrum auction ensures that the company's expansion plans can proceed smoothly.
"Our specialisation in broadband won't be restricted to data," he says. "We've successfully trialed Internet-based voice services across our network as well as video streaming and digital television."
The company says its move into Dunedin will break the local loop "stranglehold " in the south.
Walker is establishing a point of presence – a large radio antenna – in the Forsyth Barr building on the corner of Stuart Street and the Octagon, which it says will allow it to provide a "wireless local loop" covering most of the city.
Walker's fixed wireless network already covers Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga and Whangarei.
The company has embarked on a week-long sales drive in Dunedin.
