The desktop PC as we know it is about to change dramatically, in tandem with the Internet-inspired revolution in the overall business environment, according to the newly appointed head of the world's largest PC supplier.

Future PC clients will combine the ease-of-use of consumer electronics devices, wireless connections and Internet content to "redefine information access," said Michael Capellas, president and chief executive officer of Compaq Computer Corp., in a presentation today here at IDC's European IT Forum.

End-users are about to see on their desktops a new wave of client devices featuring innovative industrial designs that will be available in new and more flexible form factors, said Capellas.

In many cases, wireless connections will enable users to have instant access to information wherever they are, he added.

Compaq, for example, has an ongoing research project aimed at developing a "pocket computer" that will allow for wireless access to information in a small-sized portable form factor, featuring a color touch-screen and as much as 64Mbof RAM (random access memory), Capellas said.

Compaq Computer , in Houston, can be reached on the Web at http://www.compaq.com/.
