INSIGHT: Working towards a digital New Zealand

The Internet could have been purpose built for New Zealand – an isolated nation of entrepreneurs and innovators who can’t help but compare ourselves to the rest of the world.

The Internet could have been purpose built for New Zealand – an isolated nation of entrepreneurs and innovators who can’t help but compare ourselves to the rest of the world.

Our greatest exports have conquered the globe – the All Blacks and Sir Peter Jackson; sauvignon blanc and New Zealand lamb; and our new heroes, Xero and Lorde.

These last two have redefined success for a digital age. By basing their achievements on the power of the Internet, they have not only overcome, but have taken advantage of our unique place in the world.

The Internet is still in its infancy, yet has already changed the world. Now it presents both a challenge and an opportunity to transform our approach to business, education and government, to create a prosperous and successful future for all New Zealanders.

The Innovation Partnership has a vision for New Zealand where children are educated to succeed in a digital world, the economy is driven by digital innovations, and government is digitally capable and accessible.

The Partnership met in Christchurch during the holiday period with thinkers, innovators and leaders from throughout the country to discuss how a rebuilt Christchurch can take full advantage of Ultra-Fast Broadband, and how the primary sector can make the most of the Rural Broadband initiative.

Digital education

The Internet has radically changed our understanding of knowledge and information and there are many incredible stories of success through digitally-enabled learning.

To thrive in a digital economy and society, the next generation needs an education system where every New Zealand child is taught in a digitally enabled classroom, by a digitally capable teacher, and graduate ready to work in a digital economy.
