IPv6 wins support as 3G multimedia protocol

Nokia said yesterday that an industry group aimed at standardising equipment for next-generation mobile networks has accepted the Finnish mobile phone vendor's proposal to adopt IPv6 (Internet protocol version six) as the protocol for IP-based multimedia services.

The proposal, which paves the way to make IPv6 the standard protocol in third-generation (3G) mobile multimedia networks, was accepted last week in a plenary session of the system architecture group of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Nokia said in a statement.

IPv6 is the new, updated version of the main Internet communications protocol.
